Nouns
discontent – the state of being unhappy with something.
o The management could sense growing discontent among the staff.
· satyr – a creature in myths that is half-human, half animal.
o The satyr enjoyed adventure.
· bargain – an agreement between people or groups about what each of them will do for the other or others.
o Let’s make a bargain; I’ll lend you the money if you will help me with my work.
· foundation – basic; idea, fact, or system from which something develops.
o Many ancient myths and folk tales provided a foundation for understanding the world.
· generation – all the people in a society of family who are about the same age.
o Folk tales are often passed down from a previous generation.
· Instinct – inborn pattern of behavior.
o Orpheus uses instinct to determine if his true love is near.
· Reluctance – unwillingness
o His reluctance to live without his true love led Orpheus to brave the underworld.
Verbs
· intervene – do something to try to stop an argument or solve a problem.
o Sometimes in a myth or folk tale, a powerful force will intervene on behalf of humans.
Adjectives
· greedy – wanting more food, money, power, etc. than you really need.
o Don’t be so greedy! You’ve already had three pieces of cake already.
· classic – well-known, especially as being traditional or typical.
o The story of Midas is a classic myth.
· Inconsolable – unable to be comforted; brokenhearted
o Orpheus is inconsolable when his true love dies.
· Unfortunate – marked by ill fortune
o Orpheus is unfortunate in matters of love.

Nouns (a person, place, thing, or idea)
1. grime
· dirt that covers a surface.
The dirty dishes are covered in grime.
Brian was grimy after living without soap for a few months.
2. capacity
· the largest number or amount that can be contained
This water bottle has the capacity of four liters.
The auditorium was filled to capacity
· mental or physical ability
He has the capacity to learn mechanical engineering.
Adjectives (describes a noun; gives us more information about a noun)
3. oblivious
· not conscious or aware of someone or something
She was oblivious to the boy who was flirting with her.
4. precise
· very accurate and exact (used to refer to an exact and particular time, location, etc.)
You should be sure to take precise measurements before you construct a house.
5. frenzied
· very excited or upset
· I was in a frenzied state of mind when I couldn’t find my passport.
¨ You can change the form of frenzied into a noun (e.g., My sister was in a frenzy when her dog ran away.)
6. wiry
· resembling wire in form and flexibility
· being slender yet strong and muscular
A wiry person is thin but looks strong.
7. nonexistent
· absence of existence
· not real; not present
Wildlife is virtually nonexistent in a city.
8. unwitting
· not aware of what is really happening
· not intended or planned
She kept the truth from her unwitting friends.
¨ (You can change the form to unwittingly which is an adverb (e.g., I unwittingly believe my friend’s lies.)

· to think carefully about (someone or something) again especially in order to change a choice or decision you have already made.)
